The field of Animal Assisted Therapy has been around for centuries....including use at the York Retreat in England and by Florence Nightingale. Most notably, the pioneer for using animals therapeutically is Dr. Boris Levinson in the 1960s who used his dog, Jingles, as his co-therapist to build rapport with hard to reach children.
Here are several articles pertaining to AAT. If you have any you'd like to share, please feel free to send them along to johnson2@oakland.edu.
